Does the satellite data really support the GW models? If it does, it must be the models that only show the most minimal amount of warming.
My understanding was that the troposhpere should be warming at a much higher rate then the satellite data suggests.

AFAIU, only one of the analyses is showing less than expected warming. Maybe more errors will be discovered, it is a horrendously complicated process. It was always ridiculous to prefer that record over the direct surface temperature readings. Read the Real Climate articles on it to see just what kind of challenges the satellites (and balloons) represent.

Ridiculous? How so?
Good science is always verified by independent and different means. Satellite data is an extremely important component of the dataset and I trust it's data much more then the surface temperature readings.

Paul,
Sure, science is about checking things from as many different angles as possible. For many years, many different angles all said the same thing, all except for one of five different analyses of satellite data.
It was ridiculous to prefer the single outlier over everything else. If you knew anything about what goes into devining a temperature from those microwave readings you would not trust it over, well, your own eyes, really.

Coby, nobody "preferred" the satellite data over the other data but it was, until recently, in contradiction to surface measurements.
To say that scientists are "devining" measurements from the MSU satellites is a contemptuous attitude that does a disservice to all the scientists gathering and interpreting that data.
I prefer the satellite data because it is 1) truly global 2) global measurements are made thousands of times daily 3) it provides an invaluable point of reference to ground-based measurements.

There is no information here.
Are you saying NASA screwed up one of their satellites, then I guess so. They aren't perfect. REAAAAALLLY!

You are absolutely right, the even most basic foundation of, "Greenhouse Gas," theory involves the upper atomsphere lowering the wavelengths of sunlight into infared to be bounced all over the place IN THE ATMOSPHERE HIGHER THEN 1,000 FEET OFF THE GROUND!

It should be noted that satellites don't measure temperature directly.
Satellites do not measure temperature as such. They measure radiances in various wavelength bands, which must then be mathematically inverted to obtain indirect inferences of temperature.[1][2] The resulting temperature profiles depend on details of the methods that are used to obtain temperatures from radiances. As a result, different groups that have analyzed the satellite data to calculate temperature trends have obtained a range of values. Among these groups are Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

A lot of people get the idea that the raw data from satellites is the 'true' measurement of temperature. This error is understandable - satellites are state of the art technology, cover almost the entire globe, appear to be less prone to bias, and electronic measuring would appear to suffer less from the errors and incongruities in a range of creaky old surface instruments.
From what I understand, the satellite record suffers from a bunch of problems. They are a reference point to be treated with caution. The same data can produce different results depending on the analysis methodology. Some of the results are in line with the surface trends, some produce greater warming trends, some less. And the record is much shorter than surface or radiosonde measurements. This is besides any problems that may occur with the equipment up there. It is proper, for now, that they are not used as a baseline for comparing temperature trends.
