The report which prompted the Prime Minister's warning to farmers that they will no longer be able to rely on water from the Murray-Darling system has been publicly released. It contains more dire warnings on the reliability of town water supplies. The Government's second Contingency Planning Report says it is expected that critical urban and stock demands can be met, but quality issues may arise in some smaller towns where water may need to be trucked in.
The nation's food bowl will be sacrificed to provide drinking water to towns and cities as John Howard moved yesterday to tackle an "unprecedentedly dangerous situation" in the drought-ravaged Murray-Darling Basin.
Prime Minister John Howard says irrigation water for farmers in the Murray-Darling Basin will be cut off if there is no significant rain in the next six to eight weeks. Mr Howard says the basin is suffering from an "unprecedentedly dangerous" water shortage but water will continue to be available for "critical urban" water supplies.
The Prime Minister [John Howard] today announced a drastic proposal to cut off vital water to crops in the drought stricken Murray-Darling Basin unless rains fall in the next six to eight weeks. The plan would lead to immense economic and social fallout and marks the first time such drastic measures have been contemplated.
Australian of the Year Tim Flannery has called it a national disaster plan, with worse to come. He says the greenhouse nightmare has begun.
The federal government still refuses to accept a confirmed link between global warming and the drought, but says it's preparing for a drier climate. Prime Minister John Howard has said the jury is out on the connection and in announcing severe drought measures today did not veer from that stance. Mr Howard warned that the drought in the Murray-Darling Basin was so bad irrigators would not receive any water allocations in the coming season without heavy rainfall within eight weeks.
The debate on climate change at the UN top table is a sign that the big powers are at last beginning to see sense
The United Nations Security Council has held its first ever debate on climate change with some members arguing it was not the place for such a discussion. British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett justified the debate by linking the issue to security. But Russia and China said that as an international security watchdog, the 15-member council was not the right forum to debate climate change. Mrs Beckett said an unstable climate could lead to increased world conflict. The debate was initiated by the UK, which holds the presidency of the Security Council this month. No resolution or statement arose from the discussion, in which 55 member states spoke.
Council debates 'weather of mass destruction' - US claims other factors more important for peace
A violent conflict that has claimed more than 300,000 lives in Darfur is one of the early signs of threats to global security prompted by climate change,a senior representative of the British government warned yesterday on the eve of a special United Nations debate. "Like most conflicts, it's complex. It results from an interplay of a lot of social and political and possibly ethnic factors," said John Ashton,Prime Minister Tony Blair's special ambassador on climate change. "But there is absolutely no doubt that it's a more difficult conflict to deal with, because on top of all that, you've had a 40-per-cent fall in the rainfall in northern Darfur over the last 25 to 30 years, again in a way that's entirely consistent with what the climate models would have told you to expect."
Global warming will cause the Himalayan glaciers to melt, leading to mass migration and possibly conflicts over valuable resources such as agricultural land and fresh water, the U.N. Environment Programme chief said. Achim Steiner, speaking ahead of the U.N. Security Council's first-ever debate on climate change, said that global warming should be considered a security issue as shortages of water and fertile land in the next 10 to 20 years may lead to conflicts. The melting of the Himalayan glaciers is expected to displace millions of people from low-lying land as sea levels rise, and will disrupt river flows and irrigation of agricultural land.
Politicians everywhere don't lead public opinion, they follow it, and when public opinion says go green, even right wing Australians ban incandescents. Survival trumps ideology.
U.S. scientists using satellite data have determined a reversal of the Arctic Ocean's circulation might be under way. Satellite-detected distribution and magnitude of the salinity and bottom pressure in parts of the polar ocean suggest a shift from a clockwise to a counterclockwise pattern prevalent prior to the 1990s.
A fresh assessment suggests the famous ice fields on Africa's tallest mountain will be around for decades yet. Recent concerns that climate warming would rob Mount Kilimanjaro of all its glaciers within 20 years are overly pessimistic, say Austrian scientists. Their weather station data and modelling work indicate the tropical ice should last well beyond 2040.

Coastal engineers from more than 40 countries will meet on Queensland's Gold Coast today to consider the impact of global warming.
Two events in nature that usually herald the beginning of summer have started already, say researchers looking into reports from the public. The blossoming of hawthorn and return of migrating swifts - usually in May - have prompted the Woodland Trust to declare "spring is the new summer".
If you want to go on living on the planet Earth, then you'd better learn how to love sequestration. Because if sequestration doesn't work, the planet is toast. Literally.
Professor Nigel Weiss, 2007 winner of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Gold medal,is rebutting claims that a fall in solar activity could cancel out the effects of man-made global warming. In a lecture at the RAS-sponsored National Astronomy Meeting in Preston, Professor Weiss, who is Emeritus Professor in Mathematical Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, described how solar activity was an important factor in past climate change but that current global warming is very much driven by human activity - specifically the emission of greenhouse gases.
The United States supports moves to strengthen the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) but sees no need for a new, more powerful U.N. agency, a U.S. official said on Tuesday. France led 46 nations calling in February for the creation of a U.N. Environment Organisation (UNEO) to fight threats like global warming, water shortages and the extinction of species.
Major Players in the Carbon Markets to Meet in May [21-23] at North Americ's First Carbon Finance and Investment Summit
Human activity is contributing to climate change but programs like emissions trading are futile unless big polluters such as China and the US are on board, Treasurer Peter Costello says.
The United States will not join an international regime curbing emissions blamed for global warming until it also applied to China and India, the US ambassador to the European Union said on Wednesday.
Leaders from three steadfastly right-wing arenas - church, military and industry - are now calling for limits on US emissions.
Use of clean-coal technology to capture and store carbon dioxide instead of releasing the greenhouse gas into the atmosphere will not be widespread until 2045, a Bush administration official testified Monday. But senators and other experts vowed during a hearing of the Senate Energy Committee to speed up that timeline.
One of Western Australia's leading sustainability experts has unveiled an ambitious plan to make Australia carbon-neutral within three years. The former director of the WA Government's sustainability policy unit, Peter Newman, wants to introduce a tax of $13 per tonne of carbon dioxide produced. Professor Newman says this would create a $3.5 billion carbon fund each year which would be used for projects to offset emissions.
Both China and India are becoming concerned about climate change,if only for their own sakes.
The message is clear: Shanghai under water, Tibetan glaciers disappearing, crop yields in precipitous decline, epidemics flaring. These are just some of the dire consequences that Chinese scientists predict for their country this century if current climate change is not addressed. Yet China's leaders pay about as much attention to the issue as does George W. Bush. In fact, a report issued last year by the Climate Action Network-Europe ranks China fifty-fourth out of fifty-six countries for its climate change response, just behind the United States and ahead only of Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
China seems to represent all the possibilities, one day talking up coal or nuclear and the next day talking up renewables. All you can do is watch where the investment goes. One thing is certain: They are getting busier every day while the west waits for the decision: Cap-And-Trade or Carbon Tax?
China's booming economy is being increasingly constrained by shortages of energy and natural resources as well as environmental concerns -- forcing the nation to seek a more efficient growth model. According to high-ranking officials in Beijing, there is simply not enough fuel around on the planet to sustain a Chinese boom using the same energy-intensive recipe that made the western nations rich.
China aims to nearly halve by 2020 the amount of greenhouse gases it emits for each dollar of its economy, but will reject strict caps for decades,a copy of a national global warming assesment seen by Reuters shows.
This week's announcement by the Canadian government -- that it may join a U.S.-led coalition focused on voluntary emissions cuts -- could be part of a global shift away from Kyoto's binding targets.
As recently as last week Canadian officials mulled whether to weaken the government's commitment to cut emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming, according to a leaked document. The Conservative government -- which says Canada cannot meet emissions targets set by the Kyoto Protocol on climate change -- last October unveiled legislation that would cut emissions by between 45 and 60 percent of 2003 levels by 2050. But a secret government document leaked to green activists shows the officials last week proposed cutting emissions by 45 to 60 percent of 2006 levels by 2050 instead. Emissions rose steadily from 2003 to 2006.
Calling it a crime against future generations to ignore warnings about global warming, environmentalist David Suzuki was to present a petition to Environment Minister John Baird on Friday.
The scientific evidence is undeniable. And sea-level rises inevitable. So why is no one interested in the plight of our nearest neighbours... Environmentalist Tim Flannery munches on a club sandwich in a suburban Sydney shopping mall and casually begins predicting Armageddon. "Sometime in the next 30 years, we face significant destabilisation," he says. "Rapidly rising sea levels, maybe up to six metres. And hundreds of millions of refugees, because there are whole cities going under."
Fought in laboratories and farmers' fields, the fight to break us of our chronic oil habit won't be without its perils.
A climate change expert has urged Australia to step away from the development of clean coal technology for power generation in favour of natural gas and nuclear energy. Jesse Ausubel, director of the Program for the Human Environment at the Rockefeller University in New York, has also bagged renewable fuels like solar and wind power saying while they may be renewable they were not really environmentally friendly.
Unlike its rivals, Exxon Mobil doesn't much care about alternative fuels and doesn't try to please the greens. Is CEO Rex Tillerson nuts - or shrewd? Exxon is certain that oil, gas and coal will remain the world's dominant energy sources for decades to come.
A South American energy summit has ended with Brazil and the host nation Venezuela failing to reach agreement over the production of alternative fuels.
