  The Australian government has announced irrigation from the Murray-Darling river system

  will end in 8 weeks if there is no rain:

It contains more dire warnings on the reliability of town water supplies.   The nation's food bowl will be sacrificed to provide drinking water to towns and cities as John Howard moved yesterday to tackle an "unprecedentedly dangerous situation" in the drought-ravaged Murray-Darling Basin.

  Prime Minister John Howard says irrigation water for farmers in the Murray-Darling Basin will be cut off if there is no significant rain in the next six to eight weeks. Mr Howard says the basin is suffering from an "unprecedentedly dangerous" water shortage but water will continue to be available for "critical urban" water supplies.

  The Prime Minister [John Howard] today announced a drastic proposal to cut off vital water to crops in the drought stricken Murray-Darling Basin unless rains fall in the next six to eight weeks. The plan would lead to immense economic and social fallout and marks the first time such drastic measures have been contemplated.
  
  Australian of the Year Tim Flannery has called it a national disaster plan,with worse to come. He says the greenhouse nightmare has begun.

  The federal government still refuses to accept a confirmed link between global warming and the drought, but says it's preparing for a drier climate. Prime Minister John Howard has said the jury is out on the connection and in announcing severe drought measures today did not veer from that stance. Mr Howard warned that the drought in the Murray-Darling Basin was so bad irrigators would not receive any water allocations in the coming season without heavy rainfall within eight weeks.

  The United Nations Security Council has held its first ever debate on climate change with some members arguing it was not the place for such a discussion. British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett justified the debate by linking the issue to security. But Russia and China said that as an international security watchdog, the 15-member council was not the right forum to debate climate change. Mrs Beckett said an unstable climate could lead to increased world conflict. The debate was initiated by the UK, which holds the presidency of the Security Council this month. No resolution or statement arose from the discussion, in which 55 member states spoke.

  A violent conflict that has claimed more than 300,000 lives in Darfur is one of the early signs of threats to global security prompted by climate change,a senior representative of the British government warned yesterday on the eve of a special United Nations debate. "Like most conflicts, it's complex. It results from an interplay of a lot of social and political and possibly ethnic factors," said John Ashton,Prime Minister Tony Blair's special ambassador on climate change. "But there is absolutely no doubt that it's a more difficult conflict to deal with,because on top of all that, you've had a 40-per-cent fall in the rainfall in northern Darfur over the last 25 to 30 years, again in a way that's entirely consistent with what the climate models would have told you to expect."

  Global warming will cause the Himalayan glaciers to melt, leading to mass migration and possibly conflicts over valuable resources such as agricultural land and fresh water,the U.N. Environment Programme chief said. Achim Steiner, speaking ahead of the U.N. Security Council's first-ever debate on climate change, said that global warming should be considered a security issue as shortages of water and fertile land in the next 10 to 20 years may lead to conflicts. The melting of the Himalayan glaciers is expected to displace millions of people from low-lying land as sea levels rise,and will disrupt river flows and irrigation of agricultural land.

  Professor Nigel Weiss, 2007 winner of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Gold medal,is rebutting claims that a fall in solar activity could cancel out the effects of man-made global warming. In a lecture at the RAS-sponsored National Astronomy Meeting in Preston, Professor Weiss, who is Emeritus Professor in Mathematical Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, described how solar activity was an important factor in past climate change but that current global warming is very much driven by human activity - specifically the emission of greenhouse gases.
